Top 10 Movie Alcoholics

Alcoholics, eh? Cornerstone of any good movie.
Here's 10 of the best. Or is that worst?

1. Don Birnam (Ray Milland) as seen in The Lost Weekend
A classic portrayal of alcohol addition – still quite shocking over 60 years later.

2. Nick Charles (William Powell) and Nora Charles (Myrna Loy) as seen in The Thin Man
But it’s not all bad! Alcohol can make you witty, intelligent and charming! Of course, people who've seen me drunk will know that's true.

3. Martha (Elizabeth Taylor) as seen in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Sadly, alcohol can also make you bitter, twisted and vicious. Or maybe that's just women?

4. Bluto Blutarsky (John Belushi) as seen in National Lampoon’s Animal House
Fat, stupid and drunk sounds like a great way to go through life!

5. Frank Galvin (Paul Newman) as seen in The Verdict
A performance so good, he was awarded an Oscar for The Colour of Money in 1986 as an apology for overlooking him in this one.

6. Alan Swann (Peter O’Toole) as seen in My Favourite Year
Check out the clip below. When he does it, it's funny. When I do it, I get a beating from the bouncers and a stupid restraining order.

7. Dude (Dean Martin) as seen in Rio Bravo
If the movies are to be believed, the Wild West must have been swarming with drunkards. Dino just beats off a host of other contenders in the Western genre due to his admirable real-life dedication to the bottle.

8. Joe Kavanagh (Peter Mullan) as seen in My Name is Joe
Ken Loach does alcoholism. In Scotland. In the slums of Glasgow. Not a first date movie.

9. Michaleen Og Flynn (Barry Fitzgerald) as seen in The Quiet Man
Where would we be without a stereotypical Oirish alcoholic!? Fiddle-dee-dee! Begorrah!

10. Ben Sanderson (Nicolas Cage) as seen in Leaving Las Vegas
Ben goes to Vegas and drinks himself to death. Seems a little extreme.

Phew! Thirsty work putting that together. Who's for a pint?
